New Items @ Etsy!

Today I completed two new bows which I added onto my Etsy site, so feel free to click the link above and check them out. I decided to work with the leftover velvet and velveteen stuff I have so these are really lush and holiday inspired!

A million posts back, I put up a photo of that handmade Lolita dress ( aka piece of shit ) I sewed up a while ago right? Well I've had it sitting in the back of my closet not knowing how to fix it up or wear it when inspiration struck. I actually fixed up the sleeves (not as poofy now!) and added a cute bow in matching fabric to the front. I'm quite pleased with the result actually.

Alas...being the idiot that I am I neglected to take a photo and now I've already put the dumb thing away. Oh well. Perhaps when I wear it on holiday this December I'll get a decent coordinate shot of it. I'll actually have someone to take photos of me now and with cute backgrounds!

Another thing I've started to work with is fabric paint. I've got some fabric writers as a gift and so I've been doodling roses and flowers and shit on pieces of fabric that will become darling new bows in about 24 hours. I can't believe how long that stuff takes to dry and set. Ah well. C'est la vie.

That's about all I have to offer you charming ladies. So until next time.....

The holidays come early this year

I was going to wait until December 1st to put up a new layout, but I just couldn't wait because I came across this particular one late last night and couldn't stop thinking about it. So here it is. What do you think? Perfectly festive but not particularly religious one way or another.

So what's my topic for today's blog entry? Why thanks for asking, I'm about to tell you!

Today's topic is Christmas. What began as a pagan festival honoring the return of the sun and evolved into the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ has now become the world's most popular (and secular) holiday. But I'm not here to give you a history lesson, you can do that on your time. Instead, I'd like to delve into some nifty ways to observe Christmas that fit in with the Lolita theme.

A lot of Lolitas, or more specifically Gothic Lolitas, like to darken up their Christmas and make it decadently romantic. And that can be lovely, but I suggest an alternative route. Since Lolita fashion is almost directly derived from the Victorian period, why not celebrate Christmas old school.....meaning of course in the traditional 1800s way.

So the first way to acheive a truly Victorian Christmas is to decorate accordingly. And nothing screams more Victorian than a large evergreen tree (artificial works too though) strung up with popcorn and cranberries. This is remarkably easy to do and after Christmas you can leave your tree decor outside for the birds to munch on. And since they didn't have multicolored twinkling lights for their trees, they used candles. Honestly, this is a fire hazard and should likely not be attempted. However, you can easily find artificial candles designed to be used for Christmas trees to acheive the same effect.

Poinsettas and ribbons were popular adornments for trees back then, and in fact, still are. So head over to your local Wal-mart (or other department stores) and pick up a package of red velvet ribbons to secure to your tree. You can also scour the aisles for other Victorian inspired ornaments: fairy and angel figurines, glass globes, garlands of all colors, etc. The most important item is the tree topper. Go for a traditional star or angel.

For more info on Victorian ornaments, see Here.

If you would like to make your own Victorian ornaments, give these a go: Here.

For decorating the rest of your home in a Victorian manner, stick with rich and decadent hues like forest greens and burgundy and cream. Wreaths and garlands are a nice touch, as are long taper candles in ornate candle holders.

The Victorians never passed up an opportunity to throw a dinner party and neither should you. Host one of your own on the 24th with a traditional Christmas Eve Dinner: serve punch and appetizers, followed by turkey, bread, and salad with cheese and coffee to end the night. Make sure to decorate with a nice lace tablecloth and a beautiful Christmas centerpiece.

For more info on a typical Victorian Christmas meal, see Here.

The first Christmas card was designed in 1843 and thus began the sending of holiday greeting cards. They were originally printed on stiff cardboard and featured scenes representing acts of goodwill and charity. In the 1880s the Christmas Card business boomed and many writers and artists contributed to the cause. Instead of tracking down expensive and vintage holiday cards (though you're certainly welcome to) you can also create your own.

Cut out rectangles from stiff cardboard or poster and decorate them with ribbons, lace, glitter, and pressed flowers. Be creative and have fun. Write your personalize messages on the back and then send them off in nice envelopes. If you want to make Christmas cards, be sure to send one to me. I love displaying them!

In keeping with the Victorian tradition, gifts made by the giver are always more cherished and appreciated. So instead of spending a ton of money at the mall this year, why not create something unique and special for your loved ones?

For those who can knit or crochet, why not modernize a nineteenth century accessory for the fashionable lady of today. Pick a 19th century purse pattern to make a unique cell phone holder.

Hand painting china was an easy and popular craft, especially at holiday time. Finding a single tea cup and saucer at an antique store, then wrapping it with cookies and tea bags would make a special gift year round. Furthermore, it would be easy to create your own ceramic gift - most pottery or ceramic studios provide everything: including stamps, stencils, sponges, idea books, a little coaching, and a lot of encouragement.

I hope you enjoyed this little segment on Christmas 1800s style.  I'll be dreaming of gold and burgundy ribbons, flickering candles, and delicious cups of punch of days to come. How about you?

Sewing on Saturdays

So in light of my recent Etsy sale (thank you, again) I have been inspired to make even more hair bows and things to sell. So last night I made another red hair bow with black zigzag top stitching for a punky look and today I made two different velvet/velveteen bows and attached cute little sparkly buttons on top for added elegance. When next I see proper daylight, I'll take some photos.

I can't remember if I mentioned making a trial bonnet or not, but I did in fact make one. If anyone's ever used that DeviantArt tutorial by...Saku, was it?....then you know how frickin' confusing that damn pattern is. Although, I think I figured it out now and so next time around it'll be perfect. As it stands, the current bonnet I have will look great on my teddy bear, haha!

Since I'm still in need of money (though no longer being threatened with life on the cold streets) I've decided to ad that Google Adsense thing to my blog. My brother put it on one of his old anime sites and I don't remember how much money he made on it, but I hope it gets me at least a few dollars a month. And I'm not pleading with any of you to randomly click ads, but if you feel so inclined....

That's all I have to say. Hope that you American Lolitas had a fantastic Thanksgiving and I know we're all looking forward to the winter holidays! *

Things I &hearts Thursday!

♥ Selling stuff on Etsy! ♥

Yes, I finally sold something on my Etsy site. I don't know if I have any of you to thank, but some lovely lady bought my Red Sweet Lolita Hair Bow and I'm going to ship it out in about an hour once I wake the boyfriend up. I hope she enjoys her purchase...I certainly enjoyed making it! And since it's red it'll look lovely in a holiday coordinate...assuming she's a Lolita of course. ^_^

I've decided to seriously look into petticoats. I've been getting away with my super super gathered underskirts long enough...I want POOF! And I'm gonna get it...in something that doesn't deflate like tulle. So I'm scouring Ebay for a just-shy-of-knee-length chiffon petticoat. I've found a few promising pieces in black for around $15 but we'll see. I'm waiting until after the holidays.

Speaking OF the upcoming holidays (and I don't mean Thanksgiving) I'm going to be spending it stateside in Minnesota with my family. This is going to be a great time to dress up in Lolita almost non-stop and show off to all my friends and family, most of whom have never seen me wear this stuff. My mom supports it though...she finds it a lot cuter than my previous sex kitten/Tripp pants Goth phase. I don't blame her, haha. It IS a lot cuter. I'm also hoping I can get my cousin to dress up with me. She'd probably die if I ever posted photos of her in it online though...I know all her "trendy" teenage friends would giggle....hmmm....tempting!

I plan to make myself a simple bonnet to wear today as well. I've got enough fabric I think, but no lace, so I'm just going to make a gathered ruffle edge on the brim. Should serve well enough for a trial run. I'm also going to line the inside with a very warm and kind of fuzzy fabric I have so it'll be a winter bonnet! Yay!

Well wish me luck with that and luck with making sure I can fit all my Lolita gear into my suitcase to drag on the Greyhound in a few weeks. Toodles!

Sullying Lolita's Reputation

We all know the rules and boundaries of Lolita fashion. We know what makes something authentic in the subculture and what's "ita" or even worse...clearly a fetish costume. We swoon over antique and delicate laces, coo over nicely finished seams and embroidered roses or teacups, and spend hours lovingly smoothing out each wrinkle in our favorite dress or skirt. We know that Lolita isn't a fetish costume or something aimed at being provocative or *shudders* sexy. But the general public...doesn't.

And with all the Goth shops and websites jumping on the Lolita bandwagon these days, well some (if not most) are bound to get it wrong and therefore leave anyone with a sour taste in their mouth over the Lolita fashion. I'll prove it. Go to Ebay.com and type in "lolita dress" - go ahead. I'll wait.

Now, how many results came back featuring frilly little maid costumes that seemed to jump out of the typical American male's wet dream? How many were mini dresses with oodles of scratchy lace or made out of some hideous satiny fabric? How many of these were clearly cosplay items?

And it gets worse. Take, for example, FuckTheMainstream.com - the little pet clothing shop of the VampireFreaks website and their lame excuse for Lolita:

Now,  I don't know about you, but I find this pink little mishmash of fabric to be rather ugly. Want to hear the item description:

"Awesomely adorable lolita style dress with short puffy sleeves, layered puffy skirt, lace edging, halterneck tie, ribbon bows and tie at back!Soft comfy cotton! "

And this dress retails normally for about $150. Get real!

They try to shake it up a little bit with some salvageable outerwear:

Well it's fully lined at least and the one review left on this item can account for it being warm enough, but I just don't understand the "gathered hem" and the awful corset lacing in back....

Currently on sale for $99 which I guess is cheaper than some Lolita winter coats....but I think I'd rather just snag something off Bodyline that give in to this.

Although...if one removes the silly ribbon bows on everything and fixes the hem it might be cute. Who knows.

On the upside, this shop DOES sell a buttload of Skelanimal items (which I find adorable!) and this darling little Rebel Bunny:

Tell me that isn't just precious! ^_^

He comes in a variety of colors actually and $30 isn't bad considering all the adornments.

However, Lolitas, I feel as though I've strayed rather far from my original topic. Oh yes...that all these silly Lolita attempts from novices are going to give the entire subculture's reputation a dirty name. As if we don't already have to fight about the origin of our fashion's name, now we'll have to tell people (politely of course) that the PVC maid costume with lace is NOT Lolita at all, even though the item title says it is. *sigh*

I just wish, if people were going to start selling Lolita items, that they'd take the time to research the style properly and try their very best to produce good quality items and not just slap bows and ribbons on everything and then call in Lolita. That is just sad.

So tell me, have you come across every stores or sites yourself selling supposed Lolita items that look nothing like Lolita?

Of Gifts and Choices

I'm sure most of you have read my previous post by now and I have no desire whatsoever to go on about my problems, so let's have this entry be of a lighter-hearted nature. As it happens, my boyfriend's father offered to buy me a gift on my birthday and as I never found a truly desired item on that long ago October evening, he claims that his offer still stands. So this left me with a dilemma. Of which darling and wanted Lolita item would I spring for?

My first response, of course, was to scour Bodyline for anything that would fall within a decent price range and was something that I know I would enjoy wearing. I did find a few noteworthy items:

Of course, I also took a gander over at http://www.fanplusfriend.com/ and found a gem there as well:

So I'm a bit at a loss. I'm inclined to be my usual thrifty self and opt for something that falls underneath $100. It IS a gift after all. It would rude to automatically insist on the more expensive no? Maybe I was just raised to be humble, who knows?

So, Lolitas, I'm turning this over to you. Which should I choose?

Woe says the Money Tree

...for it has not the leaves the beggar asks of thee.

Alright, Lolitas, I'm in a bit of a bind here. I need money and I need it in the next nine days. Why nine, you ask? Fantastic question...let's just say if I don't come up with $200 in about nine days I will likely be homeless. So what am I doing to remedy this?

Well, for one...I'm going to whore my Etsy site here again, including some pretty pics of what I'm selling in hopes that one (or more) of you lovely ladies will be interested in purchasing from me. In the next nine days of course.

So there you have it. The link. Click it please. If you need some incentive.....

I beg of you, buy something! I hate to submit to shameless self-promoting but I AM quite desperate here. If you don't like what you see, can you at least point this post in the direction of someone who might? That's all I really ask.

In the end, I hope everything works out for the best, but who knows....

The Practicality of Wearing a Coat

With the onset of colder weather for most of us, we're scrambling to make sure we're warm enough when we go out. I know I am, at least. I admit that I have a rather nice and long green coat that's perfect for winter (and frankly, looks awesome with classic lolita) but I'm lacking a bit in matching winter accessories.

What I wouldn't give for a cute pair of earmuffs and perhaps some darling gloves to match. But I digress.

Today my topic is, ironially, not coats. Rather, I want to gush over my new-found love of cloaks and capelets. I have a few capelets of the crocheted variety but I really really really want a cute winter one for Lolita.

Surely, you see the appeal of a cape right? They flair out to accommodate skirts of all poof and you don't have to worry about smashing the sleeves of your blouse into constricting coat sleeves. And...if you get a nice and thick one made of some warm and heavy material they're just as cozy as a fluffy lolita coat.

So I have decided on my next sewing project. I intend to make myself a darling capelet with faux fur trim. I have no idea where I'm gonna get the fabric or fur, but this is definitely on my priority sewing list. If it turns out well perhaps I'll make a few more and sell them on Etsy.

What do you think? Would you wear a capelet or cloak with your lolita?

I put a spell on you....

~Halloween

...And now you're mine!

So my Halloween was a little less eventful than some of yours, methinks. I didn't go to a nice party, or hang out with good friends. I didn't have the privilege of trick or treating like some of you. And since we only get basic cable (most of which is in French) I didn't even have any cool Halloween specials to watch.

But! It wasn't a total bust. My boy got Kiki's Delivery Service from the library and for the first time I got to watch it in Japanese and hear it with the original soundtrack. That was amazing. I also got to watch a few episodes from Season 4 Supernatural, including the one about the witch on Halloween summoning the demon "Sam-hain". I giggled so hard because not only did they pronounce Samhain wrong (several times) but they presented him as a demon. Which is funny.

Samhain, pronounced Sow-in, is not a demon or a god. It's the old Celtic word for "summer's end" and refers to a harvest festival. The last one of the year before the coming of winter. It's also a time when the veil is thin and spirits freely pass over to our realm to visit loved ones.

That's pretty much where all the spooky and ghostly stuff about Halloween comes from.

So there's no entity called Samhain. The whole episode was just silly and painted witches like me in a bad light. Oh well.

Speaking of witches, I dressed up!

I was a Gothic Lolita Spider Witch. Kind of last minute and haphazard but it turned out well enough, lol

That's all folks. Hope you have a fantastic Halloween and Blessed Samhain!
